Rephrasy Review (2026): We Paid, Asked for a Refund and Tested It

Rephrasy can get past AI detectors, but it's hard to test before you pay and its rewrites need checking. Its free plan humanizes only 100 words per account, so in October 2026 the HumanizerPRO team used two free accounts to humanize our 190-word GPT-4o test text in two parts. GPTZero's Advanced Scan rated the combined rewrite 2% AI. But the rewrite had two grammar mistakes, made the research sound more certain, added a claim that wasn't in the source and dropped key details. When we bought Rephrasy's 24-hour pass in February 2025 and asked for a refund the same day, support pointed us to its terms, which say "We do not just refund upon request." We rate Rephrasy 4 out of 10.

Key takeaways

  • Rephrasy's free plan humanizes up to 100 words, and only after you sign up. We needed two free accounts to test a 190-word text.
  • GPTZero's Advanced Scan rated Rephrasy's 171-word rewrite 2% AI.
  • The rewrite had 2 grammar mistakes, 1 added claim, overstated wording and dropped details, and wrapped a whole paragraph in quotation marks.
  • ChatGPT, given the original and the rewrite, rated the humanizer 5.5 out of 10 and called the output "a downgrade from the source".
  • The homepage says "We guarantee 100% pass rates on all major AI detectors". The terms say Rephrasy "does not guarantee that humanized text will be undetectable".
  • Refunds are case by case: "We do not just refund upon request", and lifetime deals are never refunded.
  • The Chrome extension needs an API key, and API access starts with the $25-a-month Business plan.

What is Rephrasy?

Rephrasy, at rephrasy.ai, is an AI humanizer that converts text from AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok so it reads as human-written. It's based in Germany, and its terms of service are governed by German law. Beyond the humanizer, it includes an AI detector that gives estimated scores for GPTZero, Originality.ai, Copyleaks, ZeroGPT and eight other detectors. You also get a plagiarism checker, an AI essay writer, a tool that copies your personal writing style, an API, a Chrome extension and iPhone and Android apps.

The way Rephrasy markets itself makes its main audience clear: students. Its homepage calls it "the #1 AI humanizer for students", claims it's "rated excellent 4.8/5 by 6,000+ users" and "used at 500+ universities", and says it will help you "bypass Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks and Originality.ai before you submit your essay".

Is Rephrasy free?

Only for very short texts. According to Rephrasy's own FAQ, the free plan lets you "humanize AI text up to 100 words", and you have to register first. When we asked support about a free test, they confirmed there's no free use beyond the 3 credits given at registration. The built-in AI detector costs nothing.

That isn't much to go on. In September 2026, a user in r/HumanizerPro, our own community on Reddit, said they couldn't humanize more than 100 words, even after creating an account, despite seeing Rephrasy recommended across Reddit. And since 100 words is too short for a credible AI detector test, you basically can't check Rephrasy's core promise without paying first.

How we tested Rephrasy

Because of the 100-word limit, a member of the HumanizerPRO team divided our standard 190-word GPT-4o test text, an article about a new blood test that estimates biological age, into two parts in October 2026. They used one free account to humanize the first four sentences (about 104 words) and a second free account for the remaining 86 words, kept the default settings, and combined the two results.

We compared the 171-word rewrite line by line with the original, ran it through GPTZero's Advanced Scan, and asked ChatGPT for a second opinion, sharing the rewrite alongside the original text.

Rephrasy test results

Rephrasy's result for the first part of our test text: a 96-word rewrite with an unlabeled 31 percent score from Rephrasy's own detector
Rephrasy's rewrite of the first part of our test text. Its own detector showed 31%, without saying whether that means AI or human.

Rephrasy shortened our 190 words to 171. On the first part, the built-in detector under the result read "31%", but nowhere did it explain whether that was the likelihood of AI or of human writing, which makes the score unhelpful. GPTZero's Advanced Scan gave our combined rewrite a 2% AI score, which is very good. A closer reading, however, reveals flaws:

CheckWhat Rephrasy did
Grammar"based the levels of specific blood proteins" (missing "on") and "your bodies systems" (should be "body's")
Changed meaningResearch that "has unveiled" a blood test became a test that "promises to become a groundbreaking tool", and "estimating" biological age became "determining" it, which sounds more certain
Added claim"A small blood sample is all you need" isn't in the original
Overstated"A biochemical portrait that can signal robust health or potential health risks" became "a snapshot of your total well-being"
Added hype"The implications of this research are profound" became "The revolutionary test is a game-changer"
Dropped details"Even before symptoms arise" is gone, and doctors can now only tailor "prevention strategies", not "treatments"
FormattingThe whole second paragraph is wrapped in quotation marks, as if someone said it
Word choiceAI-style words like "groundbreaking", "burgeoning", "revolutionary" and "game-changer"

Two grammar errors in 171 words isn't great when the homepage advertises "zero grammatical errors" and "meaning preserved". The added claim and firmer language are riskier still: in an essay or an article, you'd be submitting things your source never said. When we gave ChatGPT the original and the rewrite and asked it to rate the humanizer, it scored it 5.5 out of 10 (6.5 for meaning, 5 for writing quality and 5 for naturalness) and concluded that "this output is a downgrade from the source".

So Rephrasy is capable of getting past GPTZero's Advanced Scan, but you must be ready to review all of its work and restore anything it altered. Also, 171 words is on the low end for a detector: reviews of GPTZero commonly recommend at least 250 words for a dependable result, and you can't get close to that in one go on Rephrasy's free plan. We paid for Rephrasy and asked for a refund

Rephrasy receipt from Paddle, February 13, 2025: 24 hours pass, 7.99 dollars, paid, with personal details removed
Our receipt for Rephrasy's 24-hour pass, February 2025 (personal details removed).

To test Rephrasy properly, on February 13, 2025, we bought its 24-hour pass for $7.99 (the same pass costs $12.99 today). Payment was processed by Rephrasy's billing partner, Paddle, and appeared on our card statement as "PADDLE.NET* REPHRASY".

We contacted support that same day to ask for a cancellation and a refund, explaining that we had only wanted to test the humanizer. The support agent, who confirmed they were a human, replied that we should "check the TOS", said "there is no testing", and told us the only free trial is the 3 credits you get when you register. No refund was given.

That matches Rephrasy's terms of service. Section 5 says refunds are "possible under specific conditions", that used credits aren't refunded, and that exceptions are "case-by-case". It adds: "We do not just refund upon request. We offer a free-trial which helps you to figure out if our service is the right one for you. We do not refund any lifetime deals!"

So treat any Rephrasy purchase as final. If you have a billing problem, you can also contact Paddle's buyer support at paddle.net, since Paddle is the company that charges your card.

Rephrasy's claims, checked

Rephrasy's homepage and its own terms don't always say the same thing:

  • "We guarantee 100% pass rates on all major AI detectors." Its terms say Rephrasy "aims to humanize text effectively but does not guarantee that humanized text will be undetectable by AI detectors."
  • "Zero grammatical errors. Meaning preserved." Our 171-word rewrite had two grammar mistakes, an added claim, stronger wording than the source and dropped details.
  • "Rated Excellent 4.8/5 by 6,000+ users." The homepage doesn't say where this rating comes from. When we checked in October 2026, Rephrasy's Trustpilot page had a single review, rated 1 star.
  • "A free plan" and "Get started for free". The free plan covers 100 words, and the terms also say that when you cancel a subscription, the humanizer drops to "a maximum of 100 words".

The Rephrasy Chrome extension needs an API key

Rephrasy's pricing table says "Use the Chrome Extension" is included in every subscription, even the cheapest, Growth. But the extension's Chrome Web Store page says that to use it, you open its settings and enter "an API key from Rephrasy.ai". And on that same pricing table, API access is only included in the $25-a-month Business and $39-a-month Professional plans.

In reality, this means you can't use the extension on the free plan, and it may not work on the Growth plan either. If you're looking for a humanizer inside Google Docs or Gmail, check what your plan includes before paying.

Is Rephrasy worth it?

For most people, probably not. It did help our sample pass GPTZero's Advanced Scan, but the rewrite needed editing to fix two grammar errors, a stray claim, some overstated language and dropped details. Its free plan is also far too restrictive to test it properly, you can't count on getting your money back, and what's on the homepage contradicts the site's own fine print.

If you're set on trying it, use the free 100 words first, check the result sentence by sentence for grammar and any facts it adds, and choose a 24-hour pass instead of a yearly plan. Otherwise, you'd be better off with a humanizer you can test properly for free.

Try it free: Humanize your text with HumanizerPRO. There's no sign-up for your first 500 words, and you can check the result with our free AI detector.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rephrasy free?

Only up to 100 words, and you need to create an account first. Rephrasy's support told us the free trial is the 3 credits given at registration. Its AI detector is free. Paid plans start at $12.99 for a 24-hour pass or $18.99 a month.

Does Rephrasy give refunds?

Rarely. Its terms say "We do not just refund upon request", refunds are case by case, used credits aren't refunded, and lifetime deals are never refunded. When the HumanizerPRO team asked for a refund on the same day we bought a 24-hour pass, support pointed us to the terms and didn't refund it.

Does Rephrasy bypass GPTZero?

In our test, yes. GPTZero's Advanced Scan rated Rephrasy's 171-word rewrite of our GPT-4o text 2% AI. The rewrite still had grammar mistakes and an added claim, and Rephrasy's own terms say it doesn't guarantee its text will be undetectable.

Does Rephrasy bypass Turnitin?

Rephrasy's homepage says it does, but its terms of service clarify that it "does not guarantee that humanized text will be undetectable by AI detectors". We couldn't test Turnitin, because it's only available through schools. Since August 2025, Turnitin also flags text it suspects was rewritten by an AI humanizer.

Is Rephrasy legit?

Rephrasy is a real business: a registered German company that takes payments through Paddle. But some of its marketing doesn't match its terms, such as the "100% pass rates" guarantee, and its free plan is too small to test it before you pay.

Does the Rephrasy Chrome extension work for free?

No, because the extension needs a Rephrasy API key, which comes with the Business plan ($25 a month) or higher.

What is the best Rephrasy alternative?

SuperHumanizer is the best free alternative: it's free, needs no sign-up and humanizes 1,200 words per run. HumanizerPRO is the best paid alternative: you can try 500 words without an account, plans start at $7 a month billed yearly, and it comes with a free AI detector, plagiarism checker, fact checker and a 3-day money-back guarantee.
